Red Ribbons Unite Rockland Community in the Fight Against Impaired Driving - MADD
By Izabela Daszkiewicz
In a recent gathering hosted by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Canada, key figures from the City of Clarence, MADD, and law enforcement came together to emphasize the critical importance of combating impaired driving, particularly during the holiday season. Mario Villeneuve, the Director of Protective Services and Fire Chief for the City of Clarence, underscored the unique perspective that first responders and firefighters bring to the issue.
"Definitely as first responders and firefighters, we unfortunately see firsthand how driving under the influence impacts the victims, the drivers, their family, but also the firefighters that are impacted by those calls," Mario stated, emphasizing the ripple effect of impaired driving incidents.
Valerie Keys, President of the local MADD chapter, highlighted the organization's mission to reduce impaired driving through education and support for victims. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to raise awareness, stating, "Driving under the influence really impacts a lot of people, including the firefighters."
Gaetan Gendron, who lost his son in an impaired driving crash in 2003, emphasized the need for individuals to consider alternate modes of transportation and make responsible decisions before going out.
The evening also featured insights from law enforcement, with an Operations Manager from the Russell County OPP stressing the criminal nature of impaired driving and the ongoing commitment of the OPP to enforce laws against driving under the influence.
The Red Ribbon campaign, a symbol of MADD's mission, was a focal point of the event. Valerie Keys urged the community to support the campaign by displaying red ribbons, emphasizing the importance of making responsible decisions during the festive season.
Daphne Love, a participant at the event, shared a heartfelt message, highlighting the irreversible consequences of impaired driving. "One decision that killed my brother changed my family's life forever," she said, urging individuals to find a safe ride home before consuming alcohol.
The event concluded with a call for community involvement and support for MADD's initiatives, emphasizing that collective efforts are essential to reduce the devastating impact of impaired driving on families and communities.
