Treaty Ten News - June 3, 2022 - Dr. Veronica McKinney
Northern Saskatchewan has its unique obstacels when facing challenges such as a pandemic and health issues. To meet this response the Emergency Operating Committee (EOC) was formed in response to the pandemic. It was a way to stay informed and up-to-date on health issues. Dr. Veronica McKinney was a key part of weekly reporting to the EOC; providing a reliable and scientific view.
The EOC is still active today with weekly briefings. The benefit of having an active Emergency Operating Committee is the ability to respond to a crises, such as health threats, forest fires, flooding, etc.
Rick Laliberte and Candace Paul are key figures in supporting the EOC in keeping it active. At the start of the pandemic they provided weekly updates to the communities of Beauval and the La Plonge reserve. CIPI Radio reported daily on case numbers, which was hosted by incident commander Rick Laliberte. Candace Paul focused on social media updates, which reached a wide audience.
The hard work and countless hours the EOC committee did not go un-noticed. The communities appreciated the daily updates, which alleviated some of stress of not fully knowing the extent of the pandemic and the Covid cases around the communities.
Dr. Veronica McKinney also covered topics such as how to deal with stress, the unknown of long-haul effects and ways we can work towards healthier communities. She is a respected doctor and never hesitated to contribute to the EOC.
It is not until you experience a crisis that you see the value in having an active Emergency Operating Committee. Thank you to everyone involved.
