Van Afuang, President of the Filipino Canadian Association in Neepawa (FIL-CAN), recently shared what’s in store for the 2025 Filipino Heritage Celebration and offered insight into the organization’s broader mission and impact.

At its core, FIL-CAN envisions a healthy, connected, and empowered community. The organization works to unite Filipinos in Neepawa and surrounding areas through meaningful programming, with a strong focus on supporting marginalized groups—including temporary foreign workers, new immigrants, youth, elders, women, and LGBTQ+ individuals.

“It was formulated from the collective ideas of officers and volunteers,” Afuang explained. “We looked at the real needs of Filipinos when they arrive in Canada—what they’re lacking, what they need most.”

Serving a wide range of immigration statuses—from Temporary Foreign Workers (TFWs) to Permanent Residents and Filipino Canadians—FIL-CAN offers vital support throughout all stages of settlement and integration, with the aim of fostering long-term belonging and community building.

The idea of organizing into regional groups emerged naturally in the early years of the organization, then known as FILTOBA. At that time, workers from different provinces in the Philippines began gathering for traditional events such as Christmas celebrations.

“Before, most workers at HyLife came from the Ilocano region,” Afuang shared. “Then came the CABALEN group, which brought a large number of Kapampangans and BISDAK.”

These regional identities continue to be celebrated through year-round activities, including sports programs like the Neepawa Ballers and Neepawa Spikers. The goal is not just recreation but creating spaces for cultural expression, social connection, and mental well-being—especially during the long winter months.

“Our specific plan is to provide fun, inclusive activities that help address the mental health needs of the Filipino community, and to continue advocating for their broader needs,” said Afuang.

That spirit of unity will once again be on full display when Neepawa hosts the next Filipino Heritage Celebration on June 14, 2025—a much-anticipated event that promises a joyful and vibrant showcase of Filipino culture, resilience, and pride.
