Понад 80 років Конгрес українців Канади (КУК) був голосом української громади перед урядом Канади. Він лобіював підтримку для України, боровся за збереження культури й мови, і об’єднував численні українські організації. Але після повномасштабного вторгнення Росії в Україну 2022 року ситуація змінилася. Вінніпег, як і вся Канада, прийняв тисячі новоприбулих українців. І багато з них не знають, що таке КУК, або відчувають себе осторонь. 

У нашому подкасті ми говоримо чесно з Остапом Скрипником — дорадником Манітобської провінційної ради КУК — про цей розрив поколінь та цінностей. Чому нова хвиля українців часто створює свої ініціативи, замість того щоб інтегруватися в існуючі громади? Чому новоприбулі рідко стають частиною КУК? І чи готовий конгрес змінюватися? 

Існує глибоке непорозуміння між старою міграцією та новою хвилею. Люди, які десятиліттями будували громаду, звикли до ієрархій, структур і формального планування. Натомість новоприбулі — часто амбітні, гнучкі, сповнені енергії — хочуть швидких результатів і очікують підтримки тут і зараз. 

Остап визнає, що КУК часто відмовляють ідеям, бо ті подані сиро — без чіткого плану чи бачення. 

Звідси виникає соціальне напруження: молоді активісти відчувають, що їх ігнорують. А стара громада вважає, що нові не хочуть поважати правила гри. 

Це більше, ніж просто внутрішні суперечки. Йдеться про ефективність громади загалом. Якби ці два світи — досвід і нова енергія — навчилися чути одне одного, ми могли б створити потужну мережу підтримки для України, лобіювання на федеральному рівні, та сильну інтеграцію новоприбулих у місцеве життя. 

Подолання непорозуміння між міграційними хвилями допоможе створити сильнішу, згуртованішу, впливовішу громаду. 

Остап заохочує: не чекати запрошення. Якщо маєш ідею — реалізовуй її. Зроби перший крок, покажи результат — і тоді громада або сам КУК можуть долучитися. Бо для того, щоб будувати нову українську Канаду, потрібно не лише зберігати традиції, а й мати сміливість створювати нове.

For over 80 years, the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) has represented the voice of Ukrainians in Canada. It has lobbied on behalf of Ukraine, preserved cultural traditions, and unified community organizations across the country. But since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the landscape has changed.

Like many cities, Winnipeg welcomed thousands of newly arrived Ukrainians. Yet many of them don’t know what the UCC is — or feel disconnected from its work.

In our podcast, we sat down with Ostap Skrypnyk, advisor to the Manitoba Provincial Council of the UCC, to talk about this growing divide. Why are many newcomers starting their own initiatives instead of joining existing ones? Why aren’t more of them getting involved with the UCC? And is the Congress prepared to evolve with the times?

There’s a noticeable disconnect between the older Ukrainian diaspora and the recent wave of immigrants. Long-time community members are used to structure, planning, and hierarchy. Newcomers, meanwhile, tend to be energetic, flexible, and action-oriented — they’re looking for quick support and faster responses.

Ostap says the UCC is working to adapt: it’s lobbying for government funding, expanding settlement services, and helping newcomers find space for their events. But he also acknowledges that proposals from newcomers are often turned down — not because they’re unwelcome, but because they may lack a clear structure or plan.

The result? Frustration on both sides. Young newcomers feel dismissed. Established leaders feel the newcomers aren’t respecting the “rules of engagement.”

But this divide isn’t just an internal issue — it has real consequences for the strength and influence of the Ukrainian voice in Manitoba. If the wisdom of experience and the energy of new arrivals could come together, the community could be stronger, more united, and more impactful. Together, they could better support Ukraine, shape public policy, and help newcomers settle more effectively.

That’s the deeper value of this conversation — the “plus-value,” as Ostap puts it. Bridging the gap between different waves of migration could lead to a more cohesive and influential Ukrainian Canadian community.

His message to newcomers is simple: don’t wait for permission. If you have an idea — act on it. Start small. Build something tangible. That’s when organizations like the UCC will take notice, and might even join in.

Because building a new Ukrainian Canada requires more than preserving heritage — it calls for bold ideas, fresh energy, and the courage to lead.
