Promoting Gender Parity in Politics

The Executive Director of Equal Voice, Chi Nguyen, spoke with Civic Journalist Jake Boudrot about advancing the political participation of women and gender-diverse individuals in Canada. Equal Voice is a non-partisan, national organization dedicated to this cause.

Following the Nova Scotia election on Nov. 26, Equal Voice issued a press release emphasizing the ongoing need for gender parity in politics. The representation of women and gender-diverse individuals in the provincial legislative assembly remained unchanged at 36.4% — the same figure as in 2021.

Nguyen reflected on how this number compares to representation across Canada. While acknowledging progress, including NDP Leader Claudia Chender becoming the first female Leader of the Official Opposition in Nova Scotia, she stressed that much work remains to ensure a legislature reflective of the province’s diverse population.

When asked how to increase representation, Nguyen highlighted the importance of fostering supportive environments for women and gender-diverse individuals in politics. She emphasized that while encouraging candidates to run is crucial, ensuring they are elected and able to enact change is even more significant.

Equal Voice commended the dedication of all women and gender-diverse individuals who ran in the election, noting that their leadership sends a powerful message to future generations and strengthens democracy.

Community Hub Project in St. Peter’s Moves Forward

The Village of St. Peter’s has secured $200,000 in non-repayable funding to transform the former Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation store into a community hub.

According to the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), the investment will support renovations to create a visitor information centre, the Eastern County Regional Library, and Village Fitness, managed by the Village Fitness Centre Co-operative.

Planned upgrades include new walls, washroom improvements, mechanical and electrical updates, enhanced lighting, and a third main-level entrance. Construction is set to begin this month, with completion expected by March 2025.

Esther McDonnell, Chair of the Village of St. Peter’s, emphasized the hub’s role in enhancing community life.

“This multipurpose facility will balance natural beauty with a thriving business community, history, heritage, active living, and improved quality of life,” she stated.

Reflections from a Provincial Leader

Isle Madame native Arthur J. LeBlanc reflected on his tenure as Nova Scotia’s Lieutenant Governor upon completing his seven-year service.

“I am filled with profound gratitude for the opportunity to serve the Crown and the people of Nova Scotia,” LeBlanc shared in a statement.

He highlighted meaningful moments, from celebrating cultural milestones to supporting community initiatives. LeBlanc also underscored the importance of fostering understanding, reconciliation, and recognizing Nova Scotia’s shared history.

“As I prepare to step away from this role, I carry immense pride in what we’ve accomplished together and great hope for our province’s future,” he concluded.
