In the fourth episode of Seniors Update, we spotlight an essential aspect of community safety: scooter safety. Ensuring that seniors and individuals with mobility challenges can navigate their surroundings safely is crucial for maintaining independence and enhancing quality of life.

On August 26, 2024, Home Assistance Neepawa and District (HAND) organized a successful Scooter Safety Day at the Bell MTS parking lot with support from concerned citizen Terry Smith. The event featured an informative session led by an RCMP officer and representatives from Brandon Mobility. A total of 21 participants who rely on scooters for daily mobility attended, gaining valuable tips on staying safe while navigating their neighbourhoods.

Given the absence of specific scooter safety legislation in Manitoba, the RCMP officer and Terry Smith emphasized the importance of personal responsibility and visibility. They recommended wearing safety apparel and using proper equipment to remain noticeable on the roads.

“There are two schools of thought on how to approach scooter travel: some view it like walking, while others see it more like riding a bicycle, depending on which side of the road to use if there’s no sidewalk,” explained RCMP Officer Weston. "For your individual safety, it might be best to act as if you’re walking—stay on the side where you can see oncoming traffic. Be mindful, especially if it’s dark. Use a headlamp at night or in the evening, and during the day, remain as visible and cautious as possible. Hug the left side of the road, watch for traffic, and proceed slowly and steadily."

Terry Smith also shared that he is collaborating with Michelle Kasprick, HAND Coordinator, to develop formal scooter safety rules and guidelines for the Town of Neepawa. "Michelle and I are working together, along with Don Chubey, to propose a set of rules to the town. We’re hopeful about gaining support," Smith stated. "Our Mayor, Brian Hedley, wanted to be here today but had a meeting in Brandon. I was looking forward to challenging him to try driving a scooter himself!"
