Secrets to Staying Motivated: Insights from Healthy Muslim Families' Leaders

In a recent discussion with Osama Fazal, a project manager with Healthy Muslim Families, and Humaira Jaleel, the organization's executive director, we explored their approaches to staying motivated and managing self-care.

Osama Fazal shared his perspective on motivation. "Staying motivated means doing things that might not always be exciting, but keeping in mind the reason behind them helps you persist. It's about understanding the purpose and pushing through even when it's tough."

When it comes to self-care, Osama emphasized its critical role in maintaining motivation. "Self-care is essential because if you neglect it, it can become a reason to give up. Physically, staying healthy through exercise helps improve focus in other areas like work and school. Mentally, prayer helps stabilize your mental state, while emotional support from family is crucial. They remind me of my goals and help prevent burnout."

He also discussed managing burnout: "I experience burnout regularly, often after about nine hours of work. I set limits on my work hours and allowed myself to take a break and start fresh the next day. Balancing work and self-care is vital, even if it means dealing with a growing workload."

Osama touched on the challenges of commuting, as it can be highly exhausting. "While I enjoy my job, the long commute often leaves me tired and frustrated. I've tried various routes but am considering moving closer to work to reduce this burden."

Humaira Jaleel also provided valuable insights into motivation and self-care: "In our work, we focus on doing what brings positive change to the community. Even when results are slow, knowing that our efforts align with our beliefs and bring good to the community keeps me motivated. The results aren't always immediate, but making the effort is what drives us."

"Physical self-care is crucial, especially as we age," Humaira said. "I work with a coach who helps me stay on track with my health. Mentally and emotionally, our five daily prayers provide a break from daily stresses and remind me of a bigger purpose. Spending time with family and friends also plays a significant role in my self-care routine."

Humaira highlighted the importance of a support system. "During times of low motivation, I rely on my family, especially my husband, who provides support and advice. My kids and close friends also offer valuable support and motivation, helping me stay on track."

Both Osama and Humaira underscore balancing work, self-care, and personal support systems to maintain motivation and manage burnout effectively.
