Starfish Packs help feed children in need
According to the 2017 BC Child Poverty Report Card, one in five children in BC live in poverty.
Host Cathy Cena interviews Katrina Shelast, a member of the Port Coquitlam Rotary Club, about their Starfish Pack program, an initiative to help alleviate the problem.
The Starfish Pack Program started in Abbotsford, BC when the Rotary Club and School District came together to address the need in their community. At that time ( 2012/13 ) teachers had identified over 400 students who were in need of food over the weekend. The program now exists in over 20 cities including Port Coquitlam
The Coquitlam / Port Coquitlam Rotary Clubs currently support over 50 children from four different schools in the region through this program.
Access to proper nutrition is important for students and teachers have reported improvements in participating children's reading skills, math skills, as well as improved ability to focus and to work with others.
