In this episode of In Conversation, we discuss federal policy in Barrie with MP Doug Shipley. 

This week the Federal Conservative leadership convention kicks off. Conservatives will discuss a policy strategy, and a platform which has shifted since the start of COVID-19. 

However, how does the federal conservative strategy play out in Barrie? 

Doug Shipley is the Member of Parliament for Barrie - Oro Medonte - Springwater. And before the 2019 election he was a city councillor — representing Ward 3 since 2010.  And now he’s in Ottawa, a member of the federal conservative party. His first year in Parliament has been anything but business as usual. ‘

COVID-19 paved the way for a federal calender clogged with stimulus packages, financial relief and more. 

Many commentators say it’s a tumultuous time in the conservative party, with Erin O’Toole polling lower than expected. 

As the conservatives and NDP specifically critique the Trudeau government's vaccine plan, and economic support, Shipley says the government’s vaccine strategy has been ineffective. 

He took the lead in a fight against fraud in Barrie, in regards to the Collier St development which saw almost a thousand investors lose a combined $53 Million. 

Shipley says he’s worried about the mental impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the economic effects the lockdowns and loss of business may cause to Barrie businesses. 

MP Shipley mentioned he supports local news initiatives — however for the LJI program specifically, he mentioned he would need more details before affirming increased financial support to the program. 

As the year progresses, Shipley says he doesn’t want a snap election: he claims Prime Minister Trudeau would be responsible for forcing an election this year.
