The Struggles of Moving from Warm Brazil to Cold Winnipeg

Being an international student comes with a lot of struggles. Most of the time international students move here by themselves, leaving their family and their friends behind. Also, with Covid-19 happening, many immigrants can’t visit home, so they are feeling homesick and have to be lockdown by themselves. And with a language and culture barrier,  many of them feel left alone. Most of them move on, so they save enough money to move and get a nice play to stay at while in school or trying to get a decent job to live here in Winnipeg. With moving into a new country, they have to get a custom to the lifestyle change and the weather change.

In this episode of In Focus by U Multicultural Mark Aaron interviews one of his former classmates. He talks to Raquel Silva on the struggles she faced while moving to Canada and while in school. Raquel was born in Brazil and moved to Winnipeg three years later to help her get a better education. But with moving into a new country, she faced many difficulties. It was hard for her to find people to connect with her. She was surrounded by amazing cultures but it can be overwhelming because you don't fit in with other people and no one will really understand you. when moving into a new country you usually have little money to spend especially if you live by yourself. While in school she also had to work part-time to get enough money to pay rent and have food in her stomach.
