Impact of Covid-19 on Winnipeg Senior Homes.
Many senior groups have been affected by the Covid-19 virus. They are struggling to get workers to follow the Covid-19 guidelines. The government is trying to help these seniors’ homes the best that they can with many plans and support along the road. With code red restrictions happening in senior homes vulnerable seniors are locked in and can't have any visitors. This takes a mental toll on the seniors because they feel lonely and depressed when family members cannot come in to visit.
In this episode of In Focus by U Multicultural Mark Aaron interviews Canada’s Minister of Seniors Deb Schulte regarding the impact that the pandemic has had on senior groups in Winnipeg. On February 4, 2021, Deb Shulte held a virtual town hall with Winnipeg senior and senior groups regarding the impact of the pandemic. The topics in the meeting included the government's support to help seniors through the challenges of the pandemic.
The federal government is providing direct financial support to senior couples to ensure that people living in senior homes will have money to care for themselves. Also, a program called the New Horizons for Seniors launched two thousand community projects that reduce isolation improve seniors’ quality of lif,e and help them maintain a social support network during the pandemic. If Covid-19 is still happening in the future they're planning to establish a new $1 billion long-term self-care fund to help provinces and territories protect seniors in long-term care. It will support infection prevention, ventilation improvements and staffing.
