Schreiber Seniors get Holiday Hamper

Senior Citizens have had to face many challenges in this last year. Having been identified as  a particularly vulnerable segment of the population during the COVID 19 pandemic, seniors have also been facing increasing isolation and loneliness.

The Schreiber Senior Centre has become  a central and social hub for seniors since its inception. However with social distancing and limits on gatherings it was eventually forced to deny members access to the centre, which is part of the municipal complex in Schreiber. They have done an amazing job of promoting goodwill and community spirit and has somehow managed to remain involved in community projects despite the ongoing shutdowns with virtual programs put in place where possible.

Cathy Carlino, program director for the centre, decided it would be a good idea to finish off the year with a care package, a timely gesture that would get the message out that the Senior Centre is indeed still active and reaching out to the community. This kind of affirmation goes a long way to keep people involved and fosters a sense of connection during a time of disconnect.

Last summer's hamper giveaway was a huge success and if the Christmas care package was gonna top it then more funding would be necessary. The Government of Canada had set up a program called the New Horizons for Seniors (NHSP) and Cathy was quick to apply for funding. The money would allow for the purchase of goods for the care hampers and part of that financial package would include an amount for purchasing iPads in an effort to promote media literacy and training so seniors could take advantage of social media. The distribution will be managed by the Schreiber Public Library.

The total amount of the grant was $25,000 and will go along way in acknowledging the senior residents of Schreiber. The message from Cathy Carlino to the older citizens is “we are here for you” and we care! The Alzheimer Society of Thunder Bay contributed to the hampers with information packs and games and puzzles. The Schreiber library made a generous donation of books and helped in the preparation of the care packages. The Schreiber Senior Centre has 250 members to date which represents nearly one quarter of the total population of the town. More than ever it is important that these local treasures be recognized for their contribution to the community and the vital role they play in defining a municipalities character.
