Key Decisions Made at Eastern Charlotte Council Meeting

The February 2025 regular council meeting of Eastern Charlotte occurred at Magaguadavic Place in St. George, New Brunswick addressing several significant community issues. Housing Development Moves Forward in Blacks Harbour

One of the main discussions under Old Business was the motion to designate Lewis Connors Drive as a public street, a necessary step for a housing development project in Blacks Harbour. By approving the motion and authorizing the clerk to sign and seal the plan of subdivision, the council cleared an administrative hurdle in moving the project forward.

Economic Development Study Approved for Exit 56

Under New Business, the council approved funding for a preliminary study of Exit 56, an intersection with potential for retail, industrial, and commercial development. CBCL, the consulting firm selected to conduct the study, will explore options for expanding services and improving traffic flow.

“This exit is central to Eastern Charlotte and poses great potential for retail, industrial, and commercial development,” said Eastern Charlotte Chief Administrative Officer Jason Gaudet. The study is intended to assess the feasibility of strategic development at this key location.

Security Camera Rebate Programme Introduced

The council also approved Policy 07-2025, the Security Camera Rebate Program, aimed at enhancing public safety by offering financial incentives for residents to install security cameras. The initiative follows a similar program implemented in St. Andrews, NB last year.

“This program mirrors the successful initiative by the town of St. Andrews last year,” noted Gaudet.

Community Input and Council Discussions

Public participation was evident during the meeting, with resident Karen Kern urging the council to engage in dialogue with a property owner facing development challenges. Her comments underscored the importance of community involvement in local governance.

Councillor Alexa Detorakis also sought clarification on gas tax allocations and roadwork plans, prompting discussions on budget transparency and infrastructure timelines. Gaudet responded that updates would be provided once contractors finalized their proposals.

Routine Matters and Community Contributions

In addition to policy discussions, the council reviewed departmental reports, including public works updates that highlighted the challenges of recent snowstorms. The meeting concluded with the approval of donations supporting educational initiatives and community events.
