Environmental impact & Transparency Issues Cloud Barrie City Council's Multimillion-Dollar Sports Field Approval

Last Wednesday, Barrie City Council voted to proceed with a multi-million dollar sports field project despite ongoing concerns about transparency and environmental impact. The council also approved relocating the Sea Cadets to South Shore and developing a permanent space for them. Both projects will cost over $9 million.

Ward 4 Councillor Amy Courser proposed deferring the sports field motion for further public consultation, citing insufficient communication with residents. Her amendment, seconded by Ward 8 Councillor Jim Harris, who has faced protests from residents opposing the sports field, was rejected by the majority of the council. A Change.org petition opposing the sports field has garnered more than 3,500 signatures.

Ward 10 Councillor Bryn Hamilton highlighted the division within his own family, with his daughter supporting the field and his son favouring nature preservation. Hamilton proposed an amendment to ensure the field meets minimum size requirements and minimizes environmental impact.

Mayor Alex Nuttall supported Hamilton's amendment, emphasizing the need for environmental consideration and sensible field sizing. He also discussed the challenges posed by the absence of local newspapers in disseminating information and called for improved communication strategies. However, since Nuttall took over as mayor, Barrie has stopped the live broadcast of many council meetings, making it difficult for the elderly and people without cars to participate.

Councillor Ann-Marie Kungl expressed confidence in the staff's balanced approach to development and environmental preservation. She stressed the importance of public consultation and environmental consideration in the project.

Councillor Nigussie Nigussie emphasized the unifying power of sports and the need for accessible sports facilities. He supported the project, viewing it as beneficial for the community and future generations.

The council voted in favour of proceeding with the project, focusing on ensuring environmental protection and effective community communication. Mayor Nuttall’s support was crucial for the project's approval. Only Councillors Courser and Harris voted against it.
