Affordable Housing to Be Torn Down for Campground

During a recent Wasaga Beach City Council meeting, a proposed zoning by-law amendment sparked concern among residents. The amendment seeks to rezone a residential area into a commercial campground, a move that many citizens believe is already being implemented prematurely.

As Simcoe County and surrounding areas face an affordable housing crisis, the potential loss of existing residential properties has caused frustration among residents, particularly those living in the affected neighbourhood. The council argues that the zoning change will boost tourism, a vital part of Wasaga Beach’s economy, but this reasoning has done little to ease residents’ worries.

The public meeting saw a strong turnout of concerned citizens who voiced their opposition to the proposal. Environmental risks, safety issues, and the impact on neighbourhood children—who frequently play in the area—were among the primary concerns raised. Some residents are particularly worried about the demolition of existing affordable homes, fearing that it could create hazardous conditions during the process.

One resident even accused the council of attempting to bypass public opposition by not listing the meeting’s agenda on the town’s website, keeping details vague to limit community input.

Adding to the tension is the fact that the applicant has reportedly begun demolishing affordable homes in the area, even though the zoning amendment has not yet been approved. Residents fear this gradual encroachment will continue until the entire area is transformed into a seasonal campground, leaving no trace of the original residential properties.

In light of these concerns, residents are urging the council to defer any further action on the zoning by-law amendment for 101 Cedar Grove Parkway until the applicant restores the land to its current legal usage. They argue that allowing the project to proceed without proper approvals undermines public trust and threatens the integrity of the zoning process.
