The Mayoral Race for Halifax: A Push for Diversity and Representation

Daryl Johnson, a candidate in Halifax's upcoming mayoral race, recently shared his vision for the city on Community Update. Known for his extensive community work and political background, Johnson emphasized his commitment to addressing some of Halifax’s most pressing issues, including housing, transportation, and public safety.

"My plan is to help people get off the streets and back on their feet," Johnson stated. He proposed repurposing vacant city buildings, such as the old Spring Garden Road library and St. Patrick’s Junior High, into temporary housing facilities. "These buildings could be renovated to create rooms and house people immediately."

Addressing transportation, Johnson highlighted the need for improved infrastructure to accommodate Halifax’s growing population. "We need more frequent transit services, more bus terminals, and even overpasses to reduce traffic congestion," he explained, noting the importance of revisiting plans for a commuter rail system.

Johnson also stressed the necessity of supporting marginalized communities, drawing from his experience on anti-racist boards and advisory committees. "If I don't have people with relevant experiences around the table, they won't understand the impact," he said, advocating for a task force that includes community members and advocates.

On public safety, Johnson proposed the introduction of public safety officers to enhance security on transit and in areas where police presence is limited. "Our police can't handle everything, so we need to find a middle ground," he said.

Johnson's approach combines practical solutions with a deep understanding of community needs, positioning him as a passionate and community-focused candidate in the mayoral race.
