The Village of Grand Manan held a regular council meeting for the month of December in the Village Council Chambers that covered a wide range of topics and updates for the community. 

The meeting opened with remarks from Mayor Bonnie Morse who expressed gratitude to the trails committee for their work on Anchorage Provincial Park and acknowledged the positive impact it has had on the community. 

"We had a lot of really positive feedback, or I did through the office, even though we had nothing to do with it," said Mayor Morse. "So I think it's really nice to see some of the pictures of people who are able to utilise a trail that hadn't been able to in the past. And the boardwalk is a nice addition to our community and so to see that happen I think is a really good thing." 

A notable moment during the meeting was the recognition of Councillor Philman Green for his twelve-plus years of dedicated service to the Village of Grand Manan council. Morse made a point of formally recognizing Green with a plaque in honour of his dedication and service to the community.

"I think for anybody who's served on a committee like this or on council, you know the amount of dedication that it takes," said Morse. "And we really appreciate the service he has given to our community."

The meeting also included the adoption of several sets of minutes, with Deputy Mayor Fitzsimmons making the motion, which was seconded by Councillor Greenlaw. The meeting proceeded with discussions on various financial matters, including the approval of invoices from the general operating fund and the general capital fund.

A significant update from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police was provided, with detailed reports on the number of files, charges laid, and ongoing investigations. The increase in charges compared to previous years sparked discussions about public awareness of the results of investigations and the need for transparency in the process.

Additionally, the meeting covered reports from the solid waste committee, highlighting the success of the food cycle program and the improvements made at the bottle depot and transfer station. Plans for handling different recycling products in the upcoming year were also discussed.

In a closed session, the council made the decision to post an ad to replace Stephanie Fleet, who has served as the dog constable for 17 years, expressing gratitude for her dedicated service to the community.
