The recent regular council meeting of the Municipal District of St. Stephen covered a range of important topics and decisions affecting the local community. Held at the Garcelon Civic Centre Council Chambers in St. Stephen, the meeting addressed various issues related to municipal planning, public hearings, budget discussions, and other key matters.

The council made significant decisions during the meeting, including the approval of a bylaw to impose a special business improvement levy for 2024 and the final approval for a bylaw to regulate the use of public parks. Additionally, discussions centered on the transfer of $200,000 from the general operating fund to the General Capital Reserve Fund, emphasizing the importance of financial planning and budget management. Decisions were also made regarding water and sewer rates and charges, with the approval of a revised schedule for the bylaw respecting water and sewer rates and charges. 

Council decided to cancel the scheduled meetings for the committee of a whole and regular council meeting for the month of December 2023, providing a much-needed break for the staff after the completion of the budget and other important tasks. Given that this is the municipality's first year as the newly amalgamated Municipal District of St. Stephen, balancing the budget becomes an even more ambitious task as the surrounding communities have become one.

Another significant item on the agenda was the approval of an implementation plan for the remuneration of volunteer firefighters. Council discussed the phased approach for the implementation of the policy, ensuring transparency and clarity in the process.

During the meeting, council also addressed ongoing discussions related to housing development, business growth, and labour force development, actively engaging with developers, landowners, and business owners to explore projects and opportunities aimed at fostering economic growth and job creation in the community.
