Residents and visitors in New Brunswick are gearing up for the impact of Hurricane Lee expected this weekend. According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, the approaching storm will bring strong winds and heavy rainfall to most of the province. Public Safety Minister Kris Austin urged preparedness and cautioned against underestimating the storm's potential impact, even if it weakens to a tropical storm.

“Public safety is my number one priority, and I want people to be prepared for this storm,” said Minister Austin. “Even if Hurricane Lee is downgraded to a tropical storm, that does not mean we will escape high winds, heavy rain and power outages.”

Kyle Leavitt, Director of the New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization, stressed the importance of readiness and common-sense decision-making in the face of the impending storm.

“The storm is getting weaker, but it is growing in size,” said Leavitt. “Today and Friday are the time to prepare for this storm. There is and will be a lot of information to help you make good decisions, but perhaps the easiest and best thing you can do is exercise common sense. Stay informed and stay safe.”

Wind speeds of 60-80 km/h in most areas on Saturday, with coastal regions possibly experiencing gusts of up to 100 km/h. Rainfall varying from 50 to over 100 millimeters across the province. Elevated water levels, high waves (up to six meters), and rough surf in the Bay of Fundy on Saturday, potentially leading to localized flooding, road closures, and power outages.

The New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization is prepared to work with local governments and first responders to assist affected residents and communities.

Residents are advised to stay informed about local weather forecasts; clear gutters and catch basins to prevent water damage to homes; secure outdoor items to prevent wind damage; and assemble a 72-hour emergency kit.
