Make Rent Cap Permanent, ACORN NB Tells Province
By Arun Budhathoki, NB Media Co-op
October 1, 2022
FREDERICTON / UNCEDED WOLASTOQIYIK TERRITORY –
A temporary rent cap in New Brunswick is coming to an end on December 31. Under the rent cap, landlords can’t increase rent by more than 3.8 per cent.
The Higgs government put the temporary measure in place following campaigns by social justice groups and amid reports that low-income tenants were facing steep rent increases, sometimes as high as 50 per cent.
But with the rent cap slated to expire at year’s end, many renters are anxious about access to affordable housing, Arun Budhathoki reports.
