TELILE 24/7 Federal Election Wrap-Up for Cape Breton-Canso
STRAIT AREA - While two of the four candidates for the riding of Cape Breton-Canso, including the victorious incumbent, increased their party's vote totals from the previous federal election in 2019, overall voter turnout was down across the constituency by the time the ballots were completely counted.
Mike Kelloway, first elected as a Liberal Member of Parliament nearly two years ago, was re-elected with 17,348 votes, representing 46.3 per cent of the total vote. That's an increase of 654 votes from 2019, when Kelloway took 38.9 per cent of the vote in a hard-fought race with the Conservative candidate, former provincial MLA Alfie MacLeod.
The Conservatives finished second once again, with long-time Ottawa bureaucrat Fiona MacLeod only taking 13.133 votes, representing 35 per cent of the popular vote. Despite her combined 32 years in the public service and civil service, MacLeod finished 4,215 votes behind Kelloway and 1,648 votes behind the previous Conservative contender in 2019.
The NDP also saw its share of the vote decline, with Glace Bay-based career practitioner Jana Reddick chalking up 5,395 ballots as opposed to 2019 NDP candidate Laurie Suitor's 6,354 votes. Reddick took 14.4 per cent of the popular vote in Cape Breton-Canso on September 20, not far behind Suitor's 14.8 percent in 2019.
Apart from Kelloway, the only Cape Breton-Canso candidate to increase his party's vote tally from 2019 was Brad Grandy of the People's Party of Canada. Despite his absence from the riding and his refusal to participate in media interviews or candidate debates, Grandy - whose Musquodoboit Harbour home is located hundreds of miles from Cape Breton-Canso's westernmost borders - took 1,589 votes, or 664 more votes than Isle Madame broadcaster Billy Joyce received in the 2019 federal election. Grandy took 4.24 per cent of the popular vote in 2021, as compared to Joyce's 2.15 per cent two years earlier.
Voter turnout in Cape Breton-Canso this time around was 61.87 percent, or 37,465 ballots cast - a sharp drop from the 71.73 per cent turnout in 2019, representing 37,465 ballots cast.
