Cape Breton-Canso CPC Candidate Banks On Ottawa Experience
RESERVE MINES - Fiona MacLeod says she was always interested and active in federal politics, even as a teenager, and today the Conservative candidate for the riding of Cape Breton-Canso says it was "always on my radar" and "even on my bucket list" to run for a federal seat.
However, MacLeod's resume differs dramatically from those of her three opponents in the riding, which takes in the entire county of RIchmond and portions of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM), most of Inverness County, and the eastern half of Guysborough County. She has served for a combined 32 years in the federal public service and civil service in Ottawa, often working hand-in-hand with Members of Parliament and cabinet ministers of different political stripes.
Her most recent six years in this vein coincided with the election of a Liberal government under Justin Trudeau, which included the assignment of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and similar regional development agencies to an Ontario MP, Navdeep Bains, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry in Trudeau's government for the past six years.
MacLeod feels this action is an example of the current federal government's inequity when it comes to dealing with Atlantic Canadian issues, and she is hoping the voters of Cape Breton-Canso trust her and the CPC under leader Erin O'Toole to finally address such longstanding issues as federal health care funding, spotty cell phone and internet coverage throughout the riding, and development of various sectors of the local economy, including the Atlantic fisheries.
:"I'm truly proud of what my team and I have accomplished, but also about what we've seen of the people in our riding," MacLeod said, adding that Cape Breton-Canso voters are "very politically astute" and have given her countless individual stories that will make her first electoral campaign worthwhile, regardless of Monday's results.
"It's been a great experience," she beamed.
MacLeod's challengers in the Cape Breton-Canso race include Liberal incumbent Mike Kelloway, NDP candidate Jana Reddick, and People's Party of Canada nominee Brad Grandy.
