TELILE 24/7 PODCAST #21: Inverness Campaign Wrap-Up

PORT HAWKESBURY - Several stories surround the riding of Inverness as the dust settles from last night's provincial election results.

Incumbent PC MLA Allan MacMaster is now positioned to play a key role in the government caucus of Premier-elect Tim Houston. Elected to a fourth term on Tuesday, the Creignish native took 4,833 votes as compared to Liberal candidate Damian MacInnis' 3,112 votes and NDP candidate Joanna Clark's 698 votes.

For the first time in three elections, the Inverness riding not only includes the entirety of Inverness County but also the Town of Port Hawkesbury. However, if a province-wide Francophone lobby group has its way, a new constituency will emerge to serve the Acadian community of Cheticamp in time for the next provincial election, which is slated for 2025.

La Federation Acadien de la Nouvelle-Ecosse (LaFANE), which successfully lobbied to have the ridings of Richmond, Argyle and Clare restored to their protected Acadian status in this election, announced prior to the election call that its members are still seeking a separate provincial riding for the Cheticamp area.

Questioned about the issue, Clark, a fully bilingual graduate of Universitie Sainte-Anne's campus in Petit de Grat, claimed that she had reached out to the lawyer fighting this particular case on behalf of LaFANE and expressed hope that Cheticamp would indeed have its own riding in a future election.

Rounding out the latest TELILE 24/7 Podcast is an interview with Port Hawkesbury's new Director of Recreation, Marketing, Tourism and Culture, Michelle Farrow. The West Arichat native, who arrived in her post earlier this summer after several years of serving similar roles in Fort McMurray, Alberta, is excited about possibilities for pandemic-friendly social events in various parts of Port Hawkesbury.

As an example, Farrow pointed to the new Tunes On The Trails concert series, a five-part Sunday afternoon outdoor music event that takes place on Port Hawkesbury's vast network of walking trails. The opening show, scheduled for this Sunday afternoon, features JUNO-nominated Celtic group Beolach, Port Hawkesbury singer-songwriter Steve Macintyre, and Antigonish fiddler Dara Smith-MacDonald.
