Strait Talk Episode 8

In June, Lois Landry announced her intention to seek election in District 2 of the Municipality of the County of Richmond, which covers the Isle Madame communities of West Arichat, Port Royal, St. Mary’s, and Janvrins Island, extending into the communities of Martinique, Poulamon, D’Escousse, Poirierville, Rocky Bay, and Pondville. The district also includes part of the community of Arichat, making it a diverse and vibrant area with deep-rooted traditions and a strong sense of community.

When asked why she decided to run, Landry shared, “I’ve always had an interest in all things political. I’ve always been a political junkie. But municipal politics has always been where my heart has been.” Her passion for local governance is evident, as she emphasizes the importance of being directly connected to the people she aims to serve. Unlike higher levels of government, municipal councillors have a unique opportunity to engage closely with their constituents, something Landry deeply values.

“You get to be involved in the community that you’re serving,” she explained, highlighting the hands-on nature of the role. Born and raised on the north side of Isle Madame, Lois Landry spent 30 years in public education before retiring last year. Her deep ties to the community and her extensive experience in the public sector have given her a nuanced understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing her district.

“One of the things that happens in public education is that you see everything about the community; you see it in the children that come through the doors,” she stated. “Every decision that is made by municipal politicians, provincial politicians, and federal politicians, every policy, every piece of legislation, you see that is brought to bear on people when you see their kids walk through the doors.” This perspective, forged over decades, has shaped her approach to politics, where she seeks to create positive, lasting impacts on her community.

After years of balancing her career and responsibilities as a single mother to a child with special needs, Landry feels that this is the right time in her life to seek election. She believes that her personal and professional experiences have uniquely prepared her to advocate for her community and to address the issues that matter most to her constituents. As she embarks on her campaign, Landry brings a deep commitment to public service and a desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those she hopes to represent.
