St. Stephen Regular Council Meeting for October 2024: Gavel to Gavel Coverage on CHCO-TV

In the regular council meeting for the month of October, held on October 30, 2024 at the Garcelon Civic Centre, the Municipal District of St. Stephen Council convened to address a range of issues from budget amendments and community concerns. The session was recorded for broadcast by CHCO-TV.

Budget and Financial Insights

Chief Administrative Officer Jeff Renaud outlined the financial landscape of St. Stephen, emphasizing the improved assessment base and a more favourable comprehensive grant from the provincial government. "St. Stephen's assessment base did go up by roughly the provincial average, which was 8.9%," Renaud reported. He highlighted the introduction of two tax rates to address inequalities between urban and rural areas, a move that promises more equitable financial planning.

The council also deliberated on the proposed amendment to Bylaw 03-23, which concerns council remuneration. This amendment includes a yearly Consumer Price Index adjustment, a point that sparked debate among council members.

Future Planning

The meeting also touched on future development and economic strategies. Councillor Emily Rodas expressed optimism about the newly invigorated Future St. Stephen board, which aims to drive economic development. "There's always a place for passionate people in economic development here in our community," Rodas said.

Community Engagement

During the public comment period of the meeting, St. Stephen resident David Whittingham highlighted the importance of broader communication, encouraging Mayor Allan MacEachern to engage with local media to reach more residents. He also revisited discussions on a potential tourism levy to alleviate financial burdens on residents, suggesting, "It's something for council to consider for the future."

Closed Session Matters

As the meeting drew to a close, the council prepared to enter a closed session to discuss sensitive matters such as financial negotiations and land dispositions.
