St. Andrews Civic Trust Proposes Ambitious Plan For Court House

In a recent regular council meeting on November 22, 2023 in the WC O'Neill Council Chambers, the Town of St. Andrews delved into a variety of pressing matters, making decisions that will influence the community's trajectory in the coming year. Council members, alongside town staff and local residents, engaged in discussions that touched on development, fiscal planning, and community well-being.

The meeting opened with a presentation from James Gineau and Ken Beaubien of the St. Andrews Civic Trust. They proposed a twelve-month study on the courthouse and commons, emphasizing the historical significance of the courthouse and its potential revitalization. The objective is to formulate a financially prudent and independent plan for the long-term preservation of the courthouse, ensuring it contributes positively to the town without imposing a financial burden.

Following this, council considered the first reading of a new subdivision bylaw, designed to provide flexibility for sustainable growth and development. The council greenlit the motion for the first reading, setting the stage for subsequent discussions in upcoming meetings.

The town's support for motions at the Union of Municipalities of New Brunswick (UMNB) conference 2023 took center stage. The council expressed overall support for motions concerning meaningful reserves, housing regulations, short-term rentals, and advocated for increased funding for designated highways. This emphasis underscored the importance of addressing operational and capital funding needs for infrastructure maintenance and development.

Deliberations extended to the approval of the 2024 general operating and general capital budget for the Town of St. Andrews, totaling $7,657,668. The careful allocation of funds for various community projects and services reflected the council's dedication to responsible financial management and addressing town and resident needs.

Additionally, the council allocated $15,000 from the Canada Community Build Fund for repairs to Dock Road in Chamcook, highlighting their commitment to infrastructure maintenance and ensuring the safety and accessibility of local roadways.

The progress of the recently established dog park, a popular venue for local pet owners, was also discussed, highlighting the council's efforts to provide recreational spaces for the community.
