Saint Andrews Declares June 1 "Red Shirt Day"

June 1st is recognized across Canada as Red Shirt Day, and the Town of Saint Andrews recently decided to have June 1, 2022 officially declared Red Shirt Day in the Town.

At the second regular meeting of Saint Andrews Town Council for the month of May, Diane Hall, the Director of Easter Seals New Brunswick, and Saint Andrews resident Jackson Leavitt made a presentation regarding Red Shirt Day.

"We're pretty excited to share Red Shirt Day with you," said Hall. "As the Director of Easter Seals New Brunswick, I am happy to announce that and this year we're celebrating our 100th anniversary in New Brunswick, but it's all across Canada. It's called Red Shirt Day, and it is a national day of action for accessibility and inclusion--a day when people all across Canada come together and wear red in schools, workplaces, and communities to create awareness with the display of solidarity."

Hall was joined at the council meeting by Leavitt, who is a wheelchair-bound child who lives within the town limits.
"You definitely haven't have missed seeing jackson if you live in Saint Andrews," said Hall. "He is often seen zooming around his bicycle in town, but I'd like to formally introduce you to him now because Jackson is not only the ambassador of Easter Seals New Brunswick, but he is the ambassador for Red Shirt Day across Canada."

In recognition of the Saint Andrews officially declaring June 1st Red Shirt Day for the town, Leavitt presented Mayor Brad Henderson with a red shirt.

"We thank you for declaring June 1st 'Saint Andrews Red Shirt Day," said Hall. "Jackson and all his schoolmates are going to have a red shirts courtesy of Easter Seals, and we're going to be walking with them, so we'll see you on June 1st."
