Richmond District One Councillor Shawn Samson Hosts Open House and Year-In-Review
PETIT DE GRAT - The grand majority of this week's TELILE 24/7 is devoted to a look back at a Richmond Municipal Council member's first 16 months in office, as delivered by District One Councillor Shawn Samson during an open house he hosted at Centre La Picasse on March 15.
Samson, first elected in October 2020 to represent the district comprising such Isle Madame communities as Petit de Grat, Samson's Cove, Little Anse, Alderney Point, Cap-Auguet and the eastern half of Arichat, gave his audience a wide range of recaps and updates on several issues concerning the district and the overall Municipality of Richmond County.
Among other things, the District One councillor addressed the difficult decisions he and his council colleagues made in postponing a half-percentage wage increase for municipal staff to the 2022-23 budget, and gave a lengthy explanation as to how the subsequent formation of a Nova Scotia Government Employees Union (NSGEU) local for Richmond municipal employees should not have a significant impact on the county's ability to balance its budget without steep tax hikes this year or in upcoming years.
The only portions of this week's TELILE 24/7 not devoted to Samson's address are given to a longtime Liberal MLA who is one of two people running for the party's provincial leadership in July. Zach Churchill has served in the Yarmouth constituency for the past twelve years, and he feels his approach to such difficult cabinet portfolios as Health and Education in the Liberal governments of Stephen McNeil and Iain Rankin prove that he is capable of making tough decisions that take all Nova Scotians into account.
Questioned about his priorities for the Strait Area should he defeat first-term Preston MLA Angela Simmonds for the Nova Scotia Liberal leadership, Churchill responded that the provincial government must put more focus on rural economic development. He also suggested that his experience representing the bilingual riding of Yarmouth would serve him well in working with the Acadian communities of Richmond and Inverness Counties.
