Province Commits Funds for New Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home in Cape Breton, NS

PORT HAWKESBURY - A longtime nursing home serving the town and the surrounding area is getting a replacement within the coming decade.

Inverness MLA, Deputy Premier and Finance Minister Allan MacMaster made the announcement on Friday afternoon, December 1, at the existing Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home on MacQuarrie Drive Extension. While the current facility houses 66 residents, the new home is slated to house 94 people, with everyone receiving a private bedroom.

Port Hawkesbury will now join several other communities across Nova Scotia that have received funding commitments for new homes from the provincial Department of Seniors and Long-Term Care. Other parts of Cape Breton that will see new facility construction include Glace Bay and Cheticamp. Sherbrooke and Tatamagouche among the mainland Nova Scotia communities are slated for new long-term care homes.

The last time Port Hawkesbury received any major additions to its official nursing home came in 2013, when the province opened the 10-bed Almon B. Chisholm Wing, named for the man who served as the town's mayor from 1981-94.

MacMaster's cabinet colleague, Trevor Boudreau, spoke to LJI journalist Adam Cooke for an interview that is also airing as part of this week's episode of TELILE 24/7. Boudreau addressed several issues that have come up during the recently-completed fall legislature session. This same period coincided with Boudreau's first three months as Nova Scotia's new Minister of Community Services and Minister Responsible for L'Nu Affairs.

Reflecting on the increasing visibility and presence of homelessness in Nova Scotia. which has also included a growing number of tents on Grand Parade in Halifax, Boudreau noted that his department is continuing to work on temporary shelters within the Halifax Regional Municipality.

The Community Services Minister also confirmed that he is working with his cabinet colleague John Lohr, Nova Scotia's Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, to seek out every opportunity to provide affordable housing and reasonable rental fees for those seeking short-term housing options in the province.
