Hundreds of Locals Line Up at Border Arena in St. Stephen for Free Rapid Test Kits
Cars filled the parking lot of the Border Arena in St. Stephen ahead of the 10am opening of a mobile COVID-19 rapid kit pickup site on Tuesday. The mobile site was one of 20 set up by Horizon Health Network around the province this week offering free rapid test kits to the public. Each kit contains 5 individually packaged antigen tests for home use on people age 2 and older.
The pickup site in St. Stephen was scheduled to be open until 2:30pm or until supplies lasted, with one kit being handed out per person. In less than an hour of being open, 800 of the 1600 kits available had already been given out. The site will return to the same place at the same time next week and the following week. There will also be a mobile rapid test kit pickup site in St. George on Friday starting at 10am at Day Adventure Centre. Anyone who receives a positive result from a rapid-test kit taken at home must immediately schedule an appointment for a lab-based PCR test.
The seasonal Campobello Island Ferry, which is the only link to the mainland of New Brunswick that doesn't require travelling through the US, has been subsidized by the province to continue running until the end of November.
"I was pleased to hear that Minister Green extended the ferry until November 30," said St. Croix MLA Kathy Bockus.
Finally, St. Stephen unveiled a new addition to the town's monuments this past weekend. The Town of St. Stephen put on an event at Chocolate Park this past Sunday unveiling a plaque marking the place where loyalists landed in the St. Stephen back in 1784. Dozens of people that came out for the unveiling and to hear a bit about the long history of the town and what plaque represents from former mayor Alan Gilmore. The event was hosted by deputy mayor and Chair of the St. Stephen 150 committee Ghislaine Wheaton. The dedication of the plaque was one of the many initiatives put on by the town's 150 Committee this year to mark one of the many chapters in St. Stephen's long history
